During these uncertain times, those who misuse or abuse alcohol and/or other drugs are particularly vulnerable. The stress from social isolation and other Covid-19 related life changes can lead to or worsen substance use and misuse. Depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns are on the rise. These are just some of the challenges that emerge as the public health crisis of addiction collides with the global pandemic of Covid-19.
Did you know the U.S. Commission on combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis reported to President Trump on July 31, 2017? The report stated, "With approximately 142 Americans dying every day, America is enduring a death toll equal to September 11th every three weeks."
Also, the new U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Jerome Adams, stated in early April 2018, "We have a person dying every 12.5 minutes from an opioid overdose."
In our own Erie County, hundreds of families have been affected.
